The Committee is primarily responsible for promoting research into the history and archaeology of Cumbria on behalf of the Society. It considers applications for funding 3 - 4 times each year and grants awarded have ranged from £75 to £3,000.

Applications for grant aid might be relevant to the carrying out of research; or to some technical aspect of the research (such as dendro-dating; this process was involved in at least three supported projects of recent years: Clay buildings of the Solway Plain; Cowp Scar fish traps; and the Tithe Barn adjacent to St Cuthbert's Church, Carlisle.); or to publication of the work. The Committee is supportive in offering guidance on a wide range of matters, including the obtaining of sound technical information. Its members are well versed in carrying out research and in the publication of personal research and also that of others.
