The collective range of skills, knowledge and expertise of the Committee Members is very wide indeed. It embraces, among others, the fields of mining and mining history, brick and tile making, archaeology, engineering, the iron industry, common rights to natural resources, steam power, the cotton industry, and industrial landscapes.
The Committee remains vigilant concerning factors affecting Cumbria's rich industrial heritage and draws to the attention of the Council any matters over which the Council could usefully exert its influence.

The President, Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer are members of all Committees of the Society ex officio.
The Committee members collectively hold in-depth knowledge of Cumbria's historical and archaeological heritage and in addition bring to the Committee's work very considerable expertise and experience in all branches of outreach.
Strong links have been built up between the Society and other institutions in Cumbria, especially the Museums, professional archaeologists based or working in the county, the Cumbria Local History Federation, the Friends of Cumbria Archives and the county's archaeological societies.
Regular reports are submitted to the Society's Newsletter and also to the county's press, with which the Society enjoys a strong relationship.
The CWAAS has been pleased to make firm and substantial financial pledges with regard to the setting up of the Cumbria County History Trust (CCHT), which is committed to working towards the publication of a Victoria County History of Cumbria.

The President, Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer of the Society are members of all Committees of the Society ex officio.
The Committee is primarily responsible for promoting research into the history and archaeology of Cumbria on behalf of the Society. Grants awarded have ranged from £75 to £3,000. It considers applications for grants four times each year (deadlines for applications are 1 March, 1 June, 1 September and 1 December). Grants of less than £500 will be considered at any time during the year.
Applications for grant aid might be relevant to the carrying out of research; or to some technical aspect of the research (such as dendro-dating; this process was involved in at least three supported projects of recent years: Clay buildings of the Solway Plain; Cowp Scar fish traps; and the Tithe Barn adjacent to St Cuthbert's Church, Carlisle.); or to publication of the work. The Committee is supportive in offering guidance on a wide range of matters, including the obtaining of sound technical information. Its members are well versed in carrying out research and in the publication of personal research and also that of others.
