Visit to excavations at Mayburgh Henge

28th September 2025

Free guided tour of Mayburgh Henge on 28 September at 3pm

The henge monument of Mayburgh at Eamont Bridge, with its massive bank of cobbles, has few parallels in the British Isles and these lie mainly across the Irish Sea. It is entirely different from its near neighbour, King Arthur’s Round Table and Little Round Table to the south, although they might be expected to date from a similar period of time. Unlike King Arthur’s Round Table and, to a lesser extent, Little Round Table, there have been no recorded excavations at Mayburgh until now. There are, however, intriguing features to be investigated, including a possible ditch running just inside the bank which was observed by Tom Clare and has been clarified by recent geophysical survey (see NEWS 107 for Autumn 2024). The survey also detected three possible stone holes within the interior, perhaps confirming 18th century accounts of four standing stones at the monument’s centre. The small-scale excavations taking place at the end of September 2025 are intended to explore these anomalies and cast light on this mysterious monument.
