Research Framework

Cumbria and Lake District Research Framework for the Historic Environment

Introduction

This Research Framework is a collaboration between the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, the Lake District National Park Authority, and the Unitary Authorities of Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness. It is the outcome of discussions and consultation within the Society and with a wide variety of organisations, universities and individuals with an interest in the historic environment of Cumbria. We are very grateful to all those who have responded, and to the very positive reaction of the vast majority of those who were approached.

The aim of the Framework is to:

  • raise the profile of the county and its research potential;
  • to identify and address particular gaps in our understanding of Cumbria in the past;
  • encourage local societies to engage with the framework, providing assistance with accessing specialist advice and analysis, and the ability to share/disseminate their results where requested;
  • encourage external researchers to develop projects in the area;
  • focus university dissertations on the research that would target our research priorities; and
  • raise the profile of each of the partner organisations, and awareness of the availability of research funding from CWAAS.

This version of the Research Framework is not the final word. This document is hosted here on the Society’s website, as well as the websites of the partner organisations, and to enable people to comment. The questions will be updated to take into account the results of ongoing research and new ideas.
