The CWAAS is a Registered Charity and is committed to fostering historical and archaeological research of a high standard within the County of Cumbria. In order to help to pursue this aim this we have provided a grant fund to support research projects.
Applications for grant aid must be relevant to the carrying out of research; or to some technical aspect of the research (such as dendro-dating, radiocarbon dating); or to publication of the work. To see examples of previously funded projects please click the Previous Grants link under Grants on the Main Menu.
The Research and Grants Committee has delegated responsibility to consider and approve grants for research. It considers grant applications four times a year, with deadlines of 1 March, 1 June, 1 September, and 1 December. Grants are made up to £3000 and exceptionally to £5000. Applications for grants of less than £500 can be considered at any time of the year.
The Society reserves the right to vary or suspend the programme of grants if external market conditions or other special circumstances make this necessary.
We also have a separate fund for grants for students, called the Clare Fell Bursary Fund. Details of this fund can be found by clicking on Grants for Students link under Grants on the main menu.
An application form for a research grant can be downloaded from the Application Form link below.
The Committee is supportive in offering guidance on a wide range of matters, including the obtaining of sound technical information. Its members are well versed in carrying out research and in the publication of personal research and also that of others.
