Industrial Archaeology Committee Mission Statement

The Chairman and Secretary of the Committee are elected by Council from the membership and become Officers of the Society and members of Council.

No Chairman or Secretary may serve for more than five consecutive years.

The President, Treasurer and Secretary of the Society are all ex officio members of the Committee.

At all times a majority of the Committee must be members of the Society.

The Committee must report on its activities to every meeting of Council.

The purpose of the committee will be to promote research into the archaeology of industrialization, industrial processes and the Industrial Age in Cumbria and to encourage the conservation of industrial remains in the county. The committee recognises that the specialist nature of the subject requires specific expertise to advise and inform and to be identified within the wider remit of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society.

To carry out its role the committee will:

  • Provide information concerning relevant expertise and specialists to inquirers, including researchers, planners, colleges and schools;
    Encourage the Research Committee to commit funds to archaeological projects that fall within its sphere of interest and if required provide advice to the research committee on the merits of proposed projects;
  • Encourage the publication of appropriate projects in the C & W Transactions;
  • If asked, and where possible, provide advice to planners on planning applications that impact upon sites within its sphere of interest;
    Raise issues of concern with the relevant bodies, local planning authorities, the County Council Historic Environment Service, English Heritage, DEFRA etc, to ensure that industrial remains are conserved appropriately or where that is not possible prevent loss without recording;
  • Liaise with other bodies with similar interests such as the Cumbria Industrial History Society, the Cumbria Amenity and Mining History Society and CBA North West’s Industrial Archaeology Panel.
