In 1870 archaeologists discovered a remarkable collection of Roman altars 300m north-east of the Roman fort at Maryport. This collection, found buried within a series of pits, has been at the heart of major debates about Roman ritual practice, religion in the Roman army, and the nature of military settlements on the imperial frontier ever since. In 2011 a major programme of fieldwork, which was to run for five years, was launched at the instigation of the Senhouse Museum Trust; its aim was to recover the archaeological context of the altars. This volume reviews the evidence and arguments for the finds made in 1870 and details the results of the 2011-2015 campaigns. It overturns previous beliefs about the altar burials and presents a new understanding of a cult site on the Hadrian’s Wall frontier system.
Financial support for the project and the publication was generously provided by Senhouse Roman Museum, Newcastle University and the CWAAS.
