At the time of the 1851 civil census the Registrar organised a Religious Census to determine the extent of church and chapel attendance and to identify where additional places of worship were required. Incidentally it identified the strengths and weaknesses of forty religious bodies. This book collects all the data for the modern county of Cumbria, ordered by Registration District and parish and presented in a standard format.
The editor’s extensive introduction places the census in context and uses the data as the basis for a detailed analysis of the results. The individual records are also supplemented by editorial additions using information from other sources.
